An Essay and Discussion Society was set up by Friends in Bradford in September 1874, with Henry Rowntree appointed as first president and Arthur Priestman as secretary. It superseded the Bradford Friends Young Men's Mutual Improvement Society. The society initially had 12 members, but this increased to around 50 during its first few years. The Society of Friends (or 'Quakers') was formed by George Fox (1624-1691), a shoemaker from Nottingham. In the 1640s Fox travelled throughout England delivering sermons in which he argued that individuals could have direct access to God without the need for churches, priests or other aspects of the established Church.
